Privacy Policy - Gradus

Last updated: June 16, 2026

Gradus is an independent mobile app built by a student developer. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or officially connected to any university or organization. Gradus provides students with tools for academic planning and tracking, including GPA calculation, grade trend analysis, graduation planning, exam countdowns, schedule export, and more.

How the app works

Gradus offers two modes:

If you have never logged in, the app offers a demo mode with mock data so you can explore the interface without connecting to any service.

What stays on your device

Everything. All academic data is stored in a local database on your device. It is not synced to any cloud service, external server, or third-party platform. Deleting the app removes all stored data.

On iOS, a minimal snapshot (next class, next exam, GPA) may be shared with the companion Watch app through on-device storage. No network transmission is involved.

What leaves your device

Your academic data travels only between your device and your university’s servers (and Moodle if you connect it). No intermediary ever handles your academic data, and in offline and demo mode no academic-data requests are made at all.

Separately, to deliver bug fixes the app checks for updates on launch through Expo’s update service (650 Industries, Inc., served from EU-based servers). That request sends only your device platform (e.g. iOS) and a random, anonymous install identifier, never your name, login, or academic data.

When you tap on a room location, the app may open Apple Maps or Google Maps with building coordinates from a static file bundled with the app. These requests may be processed on servers outside the EU by Apple or Google under their respective privacy policies.

For local data processing on your device: Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR (performance of the service you chose to use).

Disclaimer and limitation of liability

Gradus is an independent, non-commercial app and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by TU Darmstadt, TUCaN, Moodle, or any other institution. Academic data (grades, schedules, exam dates, credit points) is fetched from your university’s systems and may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect, including due to changes on those systems or interrupted synchronization. The app shows when each section was last refreshed; always treat the official portal as the authoritative source and verify any date, grade, or registration there before relying on it.

The app is provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. To the extent permitted by law, the developer accepts no liability for damages arising from use of, or reliance on, the app or its data. Nothing in this disclaimer excludes or limits liability for intent, gross negligence, injury to life, body, or health, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under applicable (in particular German) law.

What we do not do

Your rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and objection regarding your personal data.

Since no personal data is stored on any server we control, these rights are exercised directly by you through the app or by deleting it. You control all your data.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. The relevant authority is:

Der Hessische Beauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit (HBDI) https://datenschutz.hessen.de

Children

Gradus is intended for university students and is not directed at children under 16.
